How much money should an Indian student actually plan for before choosing the UK in 2027?

For most students, tuition is the largest expense, but it is not the only one. You also need to budget for accommodation, food, transport, the Student visa, the Immigration Health Surcharge, a TB test, travel, university deposits and the first few weeks of settling in.

Current Study UK guidance gives international undergraduate tuition of roughly £11,400 to £38,000 and postgraduate tuition of roughly £9,000 to £30,000, but these are broad planning ranges rather than limits. Some 2027 courses already published by universities cost considerably more.

How much does it cost to study in the UK in 2027?

For early planning, an Indian student taking a one-year master's should normally think in terms of roughly £20,000 to £47,000 before visa healthcare charges, flights and initial setup costs, based on current general tuition and living-cost ranges.

For undergraduate study, the first-year total is often higher because many courses charge higher annual tuition, and the full degree normally lasts three years in England, Wales and Northern Ireland or four years in Scotland.

How much are UK university tuition fees in 2027?

Tuition depends on the university, course, study level and subject.

The broad Study UK ranges are useful for an initial budget, but several universities already show that 2027 tuition can exceed them.

These are actual 2027/28 published course fees, not estimated national averages. The difference between subjects matters. Laboratory, medical, clinical and some specialist programmes can cost considerably more than humanities or other classroom-based courses.

What about Master's fees for 2027?

Not every university has finalised its postgraduate 2027 fee schedule yet.

For example, the University of Manchester's MSc Management 2027 page currently says that the 2027 fee has not yet been set. It provides the 2026 international fee of £33,100 for reference. The university also lists a £2,500 tuition deposit for successful applicants, with the deposit deducted from tuition rather than charged on top of it.

Manchester's 2027 MSc Management of Projects page likewise says its 2027 fee is not yet set and lists the 2026 international fee as £36,800 for reference.

This is why a family budgeting in September 2026 should leave some room above a university's 2026 figure until the 2027 fee is officially published.

How much are living expenses in the UK?

The British Council currently suggests that an international student without dependants may spend approximately:

• £1,300–£1,400 per month in London;
• £900–£1,300 per month elsewhere in the UK.

Over 12 months, that is roughly £15,600–£16,800 in London and £10,800–£15,600 outside London.

London or outside London: which costs less?

For most students, studying outside London gives more room in the budget.

That does not mean you should reject London automatically. The correct comparison is course quality, tuition, accommodation, transport, scholarship and career relevance rather than accommodation alone.

How much is the UK Student visa in 2027?

The Student visa fee for an application made outside the UK is currently £558.

The Home Office's published fee table for 8 October 2026 also keeps the Student visa fee at £558, which is the latest published position available while planning for 2027. Fees can still change later, so students should confirm the amount when they actually apply.

The visa application fee is separate from:

• TB test;

How much is the Immigration Health Surcharge?

The current student Immigration Health Surcharge is £776 per year.

However, do not simply add £776 to your budget and assume that is your final IHS bill. The total is calculated according to the length of immigration permission granted, and your visa can extend beyond the exact course dates.

How much money must you show for the UK Student visa?

UKVI currently requires students to show:

• £1,529 per month for up to nine months when studying in London;
• £1,171 per month for up to nine months when studying outside London.

That means the maximum maintenance amount used for the Student visa financial requirement is currently £13,761 for London and £10,539 outside London.

You also need to demonstrate enough money to cover the outstanding course fees for the relevant academic period shown on your CAS.

How long must the money stay in the account?

Where financial evidence is required, the funds normally need to have been held for at least 28 consecutive days, and the final day of that 28-day period must fall within 31 days before the visa application date.

Visa funds are not your actual yearly living budget

This causes confusion for many students. The Student visa maintenance requirement is calculated for up to nine months.

But if you are taking a one-year master's, you still need to pay rent, food and other expenses throughout the full period you live in the UK.

For financial planning, use a 12-month living budget, even though your UKVI maintenance evidence may be based on nine months.

How much does a UK TB test cost in India?

Indian students coming to the UK for more than six months generally need a TB certificate if they meet the UK residence conditions. The test must be completed at a Home Office-approved clinic.

For students in Kerala, the official UKVI list updated on 14 September 2026 currently shows:
